11.10.2017 – Old Testament: Lam 1.19
To read the Bible in a year, read Lamentations 1–2 on November 10, In the year of our Lord 2017
By Don Ruhl
Most of us, if any of us, have never been in a city that an enemy attacked and devastated. Jeremiah and the other survivors of the Babylonian attack on Jerusalem knew the feeling, however. He wrote,
“I called for my lovers,
But they deceived me;
My priests and my elders
Breathed their last in the city,
While they sought food
To restore their life.”
Jerusalem was all alone. Her lovers and her leaders each sought their own needs, making Jerusalem feel the agony of disappointment. However, the city had turned its back on the Lord and sought among the nations for their gods, and adopting the idolatrous ways of the nations. Then those nations turned against Jerusalem and because Jerusalem had forsaken the Lord, the city knew the desperation of being alone.
- Do you recall a time when you forsook the Lord and felt the loneliness?
- Have you returned to Him fully?
