By Don Ruhl

When I hear of people who plotted to kill someone, it leaves me speechless. When someone plots to kill their own family, I am dumbfounded. Yet, the brothers of Joseph did that very thing,

Now when they saw him afar off, even before he came near them, they conspired against him to kill him. Then they said to one another, “Look, this dreamer is coming! Come therefore, let us now kill him and cast him into some pit; and we shall say, ‘Some wild beast has devoured him.’ We shall see what will become of his dreams!” (Genesis 37.18–20).

Envy had entered their hearts and even as envy moved the Jewish leaders to crucify Christ, so envy against their own brother led the sons of Jacob to desire to kill Joseph. This is why the Bible warns us against envy, jealousy, lust, and other spiritual problems, for they will lead us to do things we never imagined we would do.

Questions:

  • Are you an envious person?
  • Have you been known to misinterpret what people say?

  1. I agree. It seems outside the realm of even being human. How can anyone even or ever think of such a thing? This appears to be abnormal to me, yet we must go back to Cain and Abel. With only two brothers, they couldn’t get along.
