Why did the Lord have high priests in the Bible? The writer of the Book of Hebrews reminds us of their purpose:

For every high priest taken from among men is appointed for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins (Hebrews 5.1).

A high priest came from among the population and he represented them before God. In representing them, the high priests offered gifts and sacrifices for the sins of the people.

That also shows the purpose of Jesus Christ. He came down from heaven, had a human body, and offered Himself to God as a gift and a sacrifice for us for our sins. Praise the Lord that He did so, for without His work as high priest, we would have no hope of eternal life in heaven with God.

Questions:

  • Do you picture Jesus interceding for you as the High Priest?
  • How many sins does His sacrifice cover?
