Hear what God has done for my soul

Psalms Bible Background

Old Testament: Psa 66.16–20

To read the Bible in a year, read Psalms 65–67 on August 1, In the year of our Lord Christ 2020

By Don Ruhl

What is the Bible? Is it not in part, a record of people who have experienced good things with or from the Lord and they want the world to know? Listen to the ending of Psalm 66:

Come and hear, all you who fear God,
And I will declare what He has done for my soul.
I cried to Him with my mouth,
And He was extolled with my tongue.
If I regard iniquity in my heart,
The Lord will not hear.
But certainly God has heard me;
He has attended to the voice of my prayer.
Blessed be God,
Who has not turned away my prayer,
Nor His mercy from me!

– Psalm 66.16–20

The psalmist’s experience was that he cried to the Lord, and he exalted the Lord, and the Lord heard his cry, although if had regarded iniquity in his heart rather than the Lord, he would not have answered the psalmist’s prayer.

Therefore, the psalmist blessed God for not turning away.

Questions:

  • What has the Lord done for your soul?
  • Have there been times when the Lord did not hear your prayer?
  • If so, during those times were you keeping sin in your heart?
