The manna did not last long

Old Testament: Exo 16.21

To read the Bible in a year, read Exodus 16–18 on January 28, In the year of our Lord Christ 2022

By Don Ruhl

The Lord provided for Israel’s needs as they crossed the wilderness on their way to their new home, the Land of Canaan. One of the things that he did was provide them with food, called Manna. They would have to go out everyday and pick it up off the ground. However, it only lasted a short time on the ground:

So they gathered it every morning, every man according to his need. And when the sun became hot, it melted.

– Exodus 16.21

If they wanted to eat, they had to get up early and get busy picking this stuff up off the ground. It was given to them freely, but they still needed to go get it and eat it. If they waited, the hot sun melted the manna on the ground.

This is like salvation. God gives it to us freely, but we have to get up and get it. If we wait too long, it will not be available to us later. Salvation happens now on the earth. If we miss our opportunity here, we will never get another chance.

Questions:

  • Do you know what manna tasted like? (See Exodus 16.31.)
