Herod both disliked and liked John the Baptizer, leading Herod to want to kill John, but not want to kill him. Someone else did not like John and she persuaded Herod to kill John, “But when Herod’s birthday was celebrated, the daughter of Herodias danced before them and pleased Herod. Therefore he promised with an oath to give her whatever she might ask. So she, having been prompted by her mother, said, ‘Give me John the Baptist’s head here on a platter'” (Matthew 14:6-8).
Let us not make wide-open promises to people, for they may ask something that we either cannot or do not want to fulfill.
Think before promising.
