Levites among Ephraim, Dan, and Manasseh

Look at a map of ancient Israel, and you will not find a portion of land for the Levites as with the other tribes, because the Lord dispersed the Levites among all the tribes,

“And the families of the children of Kohath, the Levites…had the cities of their lot from the tribe of Ephraim…and from the tribe of Dan…and from the half-tribe of Manasseh…All the ten cities with their common-lands were for the rest of the families of the children of Kohath” (Joshua 21:20-26).

Verse 21 gives the location of one of the cities of refuge, Shechem in the mountains of Ephraim.

Even as women suffer the consequences of Eve’s sin, so the Levities suffered the consequences of Levi’s sin when he and Simeon killed all the innocent men of a certain city (Genesis 34).

Yet, the Lord put the Levites in charge of Shechem that someone who accidently killed another person could flee there and be saved from the retribution of the surviving family.

The Lord takes away and the Lord gives. Blessed be the name of the Lord.
