The power of the Lord to hinder

We often think of the miraculous as the power to heal, and truly it was, but not only to heal, also to hinder. When a certain sorcerer sought to hinder the preaching of Barnabas and Saul (Paul), Saul hindered the sorcerer for what he was doing,

“Then Saul, who also is called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked intently at him and said, ‘O full of all deceit and all fraud, you son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness, will you not cease perverting the straight ways of the Lord? And now, indeed, the hand of the Lord is upon you, and you shall be blind, not seeing the sun for a time.’ And immediately a dark mist fell on him, and he went around seeking someone to lead him by the hand” (Acts 13:9-11).

However, that should not seem too usual to us, for we only have to think back on the plagues that God put upon Egypt to see that the miraculous could also be used to fight God’s enemies.

Whoever seeks to pervert the straight ways of the Lord, as this sorcerer did, the Lord shall fight against him.
