Do we always have to be commanded?

Concerning ministering to the saints with financial gifts, Paul said to the Corinthian Christians,

“I speak not by commandment, but I am testing the sincerity of your love by the diligence of others” (2 Corinthians 8:8).

If we have to be commanded to do everything, or if we will not do something good unless we have a command for it, then our love lacks something.
