The apostles had been arguing which one of them would be the greatest, but when Jesus asked them about their discussion, they became silent, undoubtedly embarrassed by what they had been thinking and saying, especially in the presence of the humble Jesus. Knowing what they had been discussing, because He knows all our discussions, He said this to show the nature of His kingdom,

And He sat down, called the twelve, and said to them,

“If anyone desires to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all” (Mark 9:35).
