Two of the apostles wanted to sit on either side of Jesus in His kingdom, but He told them they did not understand their own request, and that they had to be willing to be immersed in suffering first. When He questioned them on that, Mark says this is what happened,

They said to Him, “We are able.” So Jesus said to them, “You will indeed drink the cup that I drink, and with the baptism I am baptized with you will be baptized; but to sit on My right hand and on My left is not Mine to give, but it is for those for whom it is prepared” (Mark 10:39–40).

How many times have we requested something of the Lord without knowing fully that for which we asked, and the Lord in His goodness toward us, either kept back part of the request or all of it?
