The cry of desperation

After six hours of the excruciating pain of a brutal Roman crucifixion, Mark shows us what happened with Jesus,

And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying,

“Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?” which is translated, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” Some of those who stood by, when they heard that, said, “Look, He is calling for Elijah!” Then someone ran and filled a sponge full of sour wine, put it on a reed, and offered it to Him to drink, saying, “Let Him alone; let us see if Elijah will come to take Him down” (Mark 15:34–36).

With His mouth dry, the weight of His body pulling on His lungs, and after beatings, a scourging, and then the pain of six hours of crucifixion, Jesus cried out to His heavenly Father, quoting Psalm 22:1, but His slurred speech sounded as though He called for Elijah, at least to some who were there.

The Son of God endured six hours of intense physical pain, but He never said anything about it. What He did cry out about was the spiritual pain of separation from His Father. The pain hurt Him so much, He cried out, asking why God had forsaken Him.

Just how much did Jesus of Nazareth suffer that day?
