Saul continued to obey the Lord as it suited him. Therefore, the Lord said something of Saul that we never want Him saying about us,

Now the word of the Lord came to Samuel, saying,

“I greatly regret that I have set up Saul as king, for he has turned back from following Me, and has not performed My commandments.” And it grieved Samuel, and he cried out to the Lord all night (1 Samuel 15:10–11).

Although Saul had done some of the things the Lord said to do, Saul also disobeyed, and so the Lord considered it as Saul turning from following the Lord.

The Lord gives to us generously even after we have sinned. Therefore, He expects total obedience.
