First Samuel 28.3 provides the setting for a desperate Saul, who had turned his back on the Lord, and so the Lord turned His back on the king of Israel,
Now Samuel had died, and all Israel had lamented for him and buried him in Ramah, in his own city. And Saul had put the mediums and the spiritists out of the land (1 Samuel 28:3).
Saul could not find help in the Lord, who was ignoring Saul, and Samuel had died, and Saul had cast out of Israel anyone who spoke with the dead, or claimed to do so.
What then would Saul do? Instead of genuinely repenting of his many sins, and instead of turning to the Lord, Saul turned to a medium.
