David had his share of problems, and even when he was old, nearing death, one of his own sons rebelled and sought to pull Israel after him,
And Adonijah sacrificed sheep and oxen and fattened cattle by the stone of Zoheleth, which is by En Rogel; he also invited all his brothers, the king’s sons, and all the men of Judah, the king’s servants. But he did not invite Nathan the prophet, Benaiah, the mighty men, or Solomon his brother (1 Kings 1:9–10).
Adonijah knew not to invite certain people, because they would not have supported what he was doing, and he knew that would remain loyal to David.
Later David straightened out the matter, but it must have been a great heart break to him that his son would do such a thing.
