What do you expect from the presence of the Lord?

Elijah went to Horeb (Mt. Sinai), the mountain of God, the same place where Moses and Israel stood before the Lord and witnessed massive sights, including fire, thunder, lightning, a cloud, a blaring trumpet, and the voice of God. Would Elijah have the same experience?

Then [the Lord] said, “Go out, and stand on the mountain before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice (1 Kings 19:11–12).

In the still small voice, the Lord spoke to Elijah, so that his experience differed from that of Moses, and that fit the need Elijah had at the moment. He believed he was the only one faithful to the Lord in Israel, but the Lord explained that seven thousand had not bowed down to Baal.

Sometimes the faith of others displays itself in magnificent ways, and at other times, things are quiet, and Elijah needed to know that truth.
