Knowing God and being known by God

What happens when we do not know God? We do all kinds of strange things, such as following idols,

But then, indeed, when you did not know God, you served those which by nature are not gods (Galatians 4.8).

What happens after we know the one true and living God? He comes to know us, claiming us as His own,

But now after you have known God, or rather are known by God, how is it that you turn again to the weak and beggarly elements, to which you desire again to be in bondage? (Galatians 4.9).

To know God, is to be known by God, and nothing surpasses such an experience. Why then turn back to the vain things we once followed?
