It pleased the Father to bruise the Son

Isaiah prophesied of the brutal treatment men would give the Messiah (Isaiah 53.4–9), which was so horrible we find it hard to believe, but then we read this,

Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise Him;
He has put Him to grief.
When You make His soul an offering for sin,
He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days,
And the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in His hand.
He shall see the labor of His soul, and be satisfied.
By His knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many,
For He shall bear their iniquities.
Therefore I will divide Him a portion with the great,
And He shall divide the spoil with the strong,
Because He poured out His soul unto death,
And He was numbered with the transgressors,
And He bore the sin of many,
And made intercession for the transgressors.
(Isaiah 53.10–12)

What you read in the Gospels of the cruel things the Jews and the Romans did to Jesus of Nazareth, pleased God the Father, not that He was glad that His Son suffered, but what happened to Jesus satisfied the wrath of God, so that we do not have to experience it. Jesus experienced it for us.

Thank God repeatedly for His unspeakable gift, which freed us from the guilt and punishment of sin.

  1. Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift! 2 Cor. 9:15

But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and manifests through us the sweet aroma of the knowledge of Him in every place. 2 Cor. 2:14

…. but thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Cor. 15:57
