Hear the manner in which Jeremiah honored God,
A glorious high throne from the beginning
Is the place of our sanctuary.
O Lord, the hope of Israel,
All who forsake You shall be ashamed.
(Jeremiah 17.12–13a)
Jeremiah honored God by declaring that His glorious and high throne was their sanctuary and so He was the hope of Israel, and that being true, anyone who forsakes the Lord will come to shame. Then the Lord responded,
“Those who depart from Me
Shall be written in the earth,
Because they have forsaken the Lord,
The fountain of living waters.”
(Jeremiah 17.13b)
Why would anyone forsake a fountain of living water and turn to a fountain of foul water? Yet, that is what people do when they turn their backs on the Lord.
