The slow departure of the Lord’s glory

The Lord did not want to leave the temple. It was Him who wanted Israel to construct the temple that they might have a place to reconcile themselves with Him, but their relentless sin was pushing Him away. Notice in the following text, that He did not leave in a hurry,

Then the glory of the Lord departed from the threshold of the temple and stood over the cherubim. And the cherubim lifted their wings and mounted up from the earth in my sight. When they went out, the wheels were beside them; and they stood at the door of the east gate of the Lord’s house, and the glory of the God of Israel was above them (Ezekiel 10.18–19).

The Lord’s glory went from the threshold to a place over the cherubim. Then the cherubim transported Him to the door of the east gate of the Lord’s house.

Why did the Lord not just get out of there as fast as possible? He loved the meeting place He had with man in the temple, in the city of Jerusalem, and in the nation of Judah and Israel. Yet, their idolatry offended Him greatly.

He did not want to depart, but He did do it completely after a while. So it is with us. Think of all that He has done. He would not leave us suddenly, but if we insist on our sin, He will leave us, because we have insisted on leaving Him.
