The Lord showed Israel great signs in the land of Egypt when He put the plagues upon the Egyptians, and then the Lord did something wonderful for Israel, separating the Red Sea for them, and did other miracles in the wilderness for forty years. Amazingly, they had a hard time separating themselves from the idols of Egypt,
“But I said to their children in the wilderness, ‘Do not walk in the statutes of your fathers, nor observe their judgments, nor defile yourselves with their idols. I am the Lord your God: Walk in My statutes, keep My judgments, and do them; hallow My Sabbaths, and they will be a sign between Me and you, that you may know that I am the Lord your God.’
“Notwithstanding, the children rebelled against Me…and their eyes were fixed on their fathers’ idols…” (Ezekiel 20.18–26).
Do you not think that if you were in the wilderness, you would not have kept the idols of Egypt in your heart? Would you not erase their images from your memory? Yet, we believe that the Bible presents the truth, but we, like the Israelites, keep various temptations and lusts in our hearts.
The truth is, we are just like them, and they were just like us. We like our sin, even after we have seen the wonders of God. This is why we must dedicate ourselves to the Lord constantly.
