The nation of Israel descended from Jacob, and Jacob’s brother Esau’s people became the nation of Edom, but that does not mean the two nations always had brotherly affection for one another,
“For violence against your brother Jacob,
Shame shall cover you,
And you shall be cut off forever.
In the day that you stood on the other side—
In the day that strangers carried captive his forces,
When foreigners entered his gates
And cast lots for Jerusalem—
Even you were as one of them.”
(Obadiah 1.10–11)
When the Lord sent oppressive nations against Israel because of their sin, the nation of Edom watched with glee, and sometimes joined in hurting his brother Jacob.
Since Edom treated his family this way, the Lord promised to bring shame to Edom, for unjustified violence always brings shame upon the perpetrators and the brother of Jacob would be no exception.
How do you treat your family?
