Would you not have been like John when Jesus came to him for baptism, and John was surprised that Jesus would go to him, knowing that John needed baptism from Jesus and not the other way around? However, when Jesus said a certain thing, John then baptized Jesus,
But Jesus answered and said to him, “Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allowed Him (Matthew 3.15).
To John, fulfilling all righteousness meant more than anything. Therefore, if baptizing the Son of God fulfilled all righteousness, John would do it.
Truly, Jesus did not need John’s baptism, which was a baptism of repentance leading to forgiveness of sins, but Jesus always did what He asked us to do. Therefore, He led the way that we might follow Him in submitting to baptism.
