The disciples wanted to know when the destruction of Jerusalem would happen, the sign of His coming in judgment against the city, and the end of the Mosaic age. As Jesus began to explain those things to them, He said,
“And then many will be offended, will betray one another, and will hate one another. Then many false prophets will rise up and deceive many. And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold. But he who endures to the end shall be saved” (Matthew 24.10–13).
As the time for the Roman destruction of Jerusalem and the temple drew near, many bad things would happen among the Jews, which would be such a sad end to a great place and a great people. Yet, for their repeated persecution of prophets and of the ultimate prophet, the Son of God, the city had to pay the dearest price.
However, Jesus offered hope to the one who endured such horrible times. His disciples could flee the coming doom, if they followed His instructions that He continued to give, and if they were careful to endure.
So, it is now. Whatever happens in the world, remain loyal to the Lord, and He shall remain loyal to you.
