The agony of Jesus

Who knows the inward pain Jesus suffered as He contemplated going to the cross for us? Mark wrote,

He went a little farther, and fell on the ground, and prayed that if it were possible, the hour might pass from Him. And He said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible for You. Take this cup away from Me; nevertheless, not what I will, but what You will” (Mark 14.35–36).

Have you had a matter so heavy upon your heart, that you fell to the ground and poured out your heart to God? If so, you can begin to understand the agony that filled the heart of Jesus.

He agonized over the physical pain no doubt, but I believe the anticipation of the Father turning away during the crucifixion, tortured the soul of Jesus. Therefore, He wanted to avoid the cross, yet, His submission to and love for the Father drove Jesus to do whatever the Father wanted. Also, the love of Christ for us drove Him to a willingness to do whatever had to be done to save us from eternal condemnation.
