The apostles had spent enough time with Jesus that they could see the kind of man and teacher He was, that He was a man of humility, who put others first, and did not exalt Himself. Nevertheless, this happened,
Then a dispute arose among them as to which of them would be greatest. And Jesus, perceiving the thought of their heart, took a little child and set him by Him, and said to them, “Whoever receives this little child in My name receives Me; and whoever receives Me receives Him who sent Me. For he who is least among you all will be great” (Luke 9.46–48).
Can you imagine arguing with your friends that you are the greatest in the group, doing so while Jesus is close at hand? Let us be careful, and not exalt ourselves, but let us exalt the Lord, even as children would do.
