Spies from the tribe of Dan found a household of an Israelite who had idols in his home. The spies made their report and told the tribe they needed to consider what to do,

Then the five men who had gone to spy out the country of Laish answered and said to their brethren, “Do you know that there are in these houses an ephod, household idols, a carved image, and a molded image? Now therefore, consider what you should do.” So they turned aside there…Entering there, they took the carved image, the ephod, the household idols, and the molded image… (Judges 18.14–17).

I do not know whether the spies intended for the men of Dan to take the idols, but that is what they did. They did not take them to destroy them, but to use them!
