You probably know David as the man whom the Lord identified as a man after His own heart, but do you know why the Lord made that statement? Saul had offered a burnt sacrifice when he should not have done it, and because he did not obey the Lord, Samuel said,
“You have done foolishly. You have not kept the commandment of the Lord your God, which He commanded you. For now the Lord would have established your kingdom over Israel forever. But now your kingdom shall not continue. The Lord has sought for Himself a man after His own heart, and the Lord has commanded him to be commander over His people, because you have not kept what the Lord commanded you” (1 Samuel 13.13–14).
The failure of Saul led the Lord to seek a man after His own heart, meaning that Saul was not a man after the Lord’s heart. David thought as the Lord thought, but Saul did not.
How about you? Do you think as the Lord does?
