David loved his children, but he had to do what was right

05.01.2014 Old Testament: 1Ki 1.11-28

To read the Bible in a year, read First Kings 1–2 on May 1, In the year of our Lord 2014

By Don Ruhl

A son of David, Adonijah decided to take the throne while his father was weak and old. Nathan the prophet saw what was going on, and worked with Bathsheba to be sure that Solomon became king, since earlier David had designated Solomon as king,

So Nathan spoke to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon, saying, “Have you not heard that Adonijah the son of Haggith has become king, and David our lord does not know it?…Go immediately to King David and say to him…Then, while you are still talking there with the king, I also will come in after you and confirm your words.” So Bathsheba went into the chamber to the king…Then she said to him, “My lord, you swore by the Lord your God to your maidservant, saying, ‘Assuredly Solomon your son shall reign after me, and he shall sit on my throne…’ And just then, while she was still talking with the king, Nathan the prophet also came in…Then King David answered and said, “Call Bathsheba to me.” So she came into the king’s presence and stood before the king (1 Kings 1.11–28).

Be sure to read the full narration in First King chapter 1, and see how everyone operated, but notice that David knew he had to set things right as the time of his death approached rapidly. People were looking to him, and he did not let them down.
