Luke 23.38 – Truth spoken in mockery was still the truth

05.03.2014 New Testament: Luke 23.38

To read the Bible in a year, read Luke 23.27–38 on May 3, In the year of our Lord 2014

By Don Ruhl

When Pilate allowed the crucifixion of Jesus of Nazareth, he also ordered a sign over Jesus, written in the three main languages of the area, that all might know whom the Jews were crucifying,

And an inscription also was written over Him in letters of Greek, Latin, and Hebrew: THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS (Luke 23.38).

Pilate did not believe it, and the Jews did not believe it, but the Roman governor put up the sign both to ridicule Jesus and the Jews. In doing so, Pilate spoke the truth, although he did not know that he spoke the truth.
