Defiling evil

05.19.2014 Old Testament: 2Ki 23.10

To read the Bible in a year, read Second Kings 23–25 on May 19, In the year of our Lord 2014

Josiah restored the true worship and religion of Jehovah God in Judah, but to do so, he had to remove evil. Notice what he did in one place and how the writer made note of it,

And he defiled Topheth, which is in the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, that no man might make his son or his daughter pass through the fire to Molech (2 Kings 23.10).

In Judah, some of the people had actually worshiped Molech, which included making their sons or daughters pass through the fire. Josiah removed this abominable practice, but the writer said he “defiled” the place.

The people considered the place sacred, but he defiled it by ruining that place so that no one could do such evil anymore.

Likewise, let us defile evil in our hearts that we might not sin against God.
