Loyal, but ignorant

05.28.2014 New Testament: John 11.16

To read the Bible in a year, read John 11.1–17 on May 28, In the year of our Lord 2014

By Don Ruhl

Jesus decided to go raise His friend Lazarus from the dead, but the disciples objected, because they believed the Jews would kill Jesus. Then John wrote,

Then Thomas, who is called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with Him” (John 11.16).

Believing that Jesus knowingly was walking to His death, Thomas with great loyalty to Jesus, spoke up, encouraging his fellow-disciples to go along that they all might die with Jesus. Thomas did not know what was happening, but we have to admire him for his loyalty, because I think many people would not have gone with Jesus, fearing death.

There would be time enough for the death of Jesus later, and there would be time enough later for the deaths of the apostles, but Thomas had the right heart that led him to become a powerful, world-changing preacher!
