Jesus knew His purpose

06.01.2014 New Testament: John 12.27–28a

To read the Bible in a year, read John 12.20–50 on June 1, In the year of our Lord 2014

By Don Ruhl

Three and a half years passed, and Jesus had grown immensely popular among the common man, but He also knew that this popularity would bring His end, because the Jewish leaders envied His popularity. Yet, He did not avoid the pre-determined day of His death,

“Now My soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save Me from this hour’? But for this purpose I came to this hour. Father, glorify Your name” (John 12.27–28a).

What He was about to suffer troubled His soul, but He would not ask the Father to save Him from that hour, because He knew He had entered the world for that very hour. Therefore, what He did ask of the Father was that He would glorify His name.

Should we not ask for the same thing? Do we not want the Father’s name glorified? Yes, we want to follow our Master and Lord. Therefore, let us pray that the Father receive glory through our lives and our deaths.
