What did the people do for the six hours that Jesus hung on the cross? We know a few things that transpired, but for the most part we do not have a record of what people did, except for this,

And again another Scripture says, “They shall look on Him whom they pierced” (John 19.37). 

Like people sitting down to stare at the gory images of an Internet video, so the people sat down to watch the horrifying death of the man they believed posed as a fraud.
