Not fully understanding Jesus, but following Him

06.13.2014 New Testament: John 20.11–13

To read the Bible in a year, read John 20 on June 13, In the year of our Lord 2014

By Don Ruhl

After Peter and John examined the empty tomb of Jesus, Mary Magdalene wept with a broken heart at the tomb, believing that someone had stolen the body of Jesus,

But Mary stood outside by the tomb weeping, and as she wept she stooped down and looked into the tomb. And she saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. Then they said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him” (John 20.11–13).

What prompted her to look inside the tomb, I do not know, but when she went into it, she saw two angels, and apparently not knowing what they were, or simply not affected by who they were, being deeply grieved by the disappearance of the body of Jesus, she had a short conversation with them.

They asked her why she wept, and she explained that someone had taken away her Lord, and she did not know where He was. Mary, like the disciples, did not yet know the prophecies of the resurrection, but she loved Jesus and devoted herself to Him.

She had no idea of the massive surprise waiting for her in just a few seconds!
