07.26.2014 Old Testament: Psa 48.8
To read the Bible in a year, read Psalms 47–49 on July 26, In the year of our Lord 2014
By Don Ruhl
Nothing lasts forever, yet, the Lord did set up something on the Earth that will last forever, and Psalm 48 hinted at what it was,
As we have heard,
So we have seen
In the city of the Lord of hosts,
In the city of our God:
God will establish it forever.
Selah
(Psalm 48.8)
God has established His city to last forever, but do not mistake the current Jerusalem for the city of God, as the Book of Hebrews says,
But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, to an innumerable company of angels, to the general assembly and church of the firstborn who are registered in heaven, to God the Judge of all, to the spirits of just men made perfect, to Jesus the Mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaks better things than that of Abel (Hebrews 12.22–24).
And again, the Book of Hebrews says, this time quoting from the Old Testament,
Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us have grace, by which we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear (Hebrews 12.28).
Truly, we have heard in the Scriptures, and now we have seen with our eyes, that in the first century the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall last forever, and that kingdom is the church, the body of Christ. If you want to last forever in a place of beauty, then be an active member of the body of Christ, which is the church of Christ.
