Song of Solomon Bible Background

09.22.2014 Old Testament: Song 4.12–15

To read the Bible in a year, read Song of Solomon 4–5 on September 22, In the year of our Lord 2014

By Don Ruhl

How does a beautiful garden with many plants and plenty of water make you feel? Do you not want to walk around in it, and enjoy the sights? Do you wish to leave as soon as possible? Now picture love between a husband and a wife in the same way,

A garden enclosed
Is my sister, my spouse,
A spring shut up,
A fountain sealed.
Your plants are an orchard of pomegranates
With pleasant fruits,
Fragrant henna with spikenard,
Spikenard and saffron,
Calamus and cinnamon,
With all trees of frankincense,
Myrrh and aloes,
With all the chief spices—
A fountain of gardens,
A well of living waters,
And streams from Lebanon.
(Song of Solomon 4.12–15)

Married love is a garden. It is a spring of water, or a fountain that has been sealed so that now it can be used for the garden, instead of just running off.

Love is also all pleasant fruits, spices, and aromas.
