Watch out when the Lord’s servants pray to Him

Isaiah Bible Background

To read the Bible in a year, read Isaiah 37–38 on October 7, In the year of our Lord 2014

By Don Ruhl

The king of Assyria attacked the character of the God of Israel, comparing Him to the dead and false gods of all the nations that Assyria had attacked and defeated. Big mistake! Hezekiah, king of Judah, prayed to the God of heaven about this matter, as the Assyrians readied themselves to attack Jerusalem,

Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent to Hezekiah, saying, “Thus says the Lord God of Israel, ‘Because you have prayed to Me against Sennacherib king of Assyria, this is the word which the Lord has spoken concerning him:

“Whom have you reproached and blasphemed?
Against whom have you raised your voice,
And lifted up your eyes on high?
Against the Holy One of Israel.”’”

The Lord then explained why Assyria had the capability of destroying other nations. The Lord enabled Assyria. Therefore, the nations could not withstand Assyria, but when Assyria raged against the Lord, they found out that you do not do such a thing.

“Did you not hear long ago
How I made it,
From ancient times that I formed it?
Now I have brought it to pass,
That you should be
For crushing fortified cities into heaps of ruins.
Therefore their inhabitants had little power…
But I know your dwelling place,
Your going out and your coming in,
And your rage against Me.
Because your rage against Me and your tumult
Have come up to My ears,
Therefore I will put My hook in your nose
And My bridle in your lips,
And I will turn you back
By the way which you came.”’”
(Isaiah 37.21–29)

Why does anyone think that he or she can rage against the Creator of the universe and get away with it? No, let us honor and worship Him!
