Paul thanked God for the Christians in ancient Thessalonica as he remembered their work of faith, labor of love, and patience of hope, and then he said,

…knowing, beloved brethren, your election by God (1 Thessalonians 1.4). 

God elected them! God elected you! Do not use that to brag about what a wonderful person you must be, but use it to glorify God, because that is what Paul meant. Let us think of how wonderful our God is!
