Knowing the importance of leadership and knowing how people often mistreat and disrespect leadership, the Holy Spirit had Paul urge the early church to show the proper respect for leaders in the church,
And we urge you, brethren, to recognize those who labor among you, and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, and to esteem them very highly in love for their work’s sake. Be at peace among yourselves (1 Thessalonians 5.12–13).
Certain men labor among the church, and they hold a position of being over us in the Lord, and their work consists of admonishing us. Therefore, we ought to esteem such men very highly in love, because of the work they do. By this, we shall have peace in a congregation.
