If the Lord wanted to show the abundance of His mercy and grace, what would He do? I can tell you what He did do. He found one who was busy doing everything he could to destroy the church and showed that destroyer mercy and grace,

And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord who has enabled me, because He counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry, although I was formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor, and an insolent man; but I obtained mercy because I did it ignorantly in unbelief. And the grace of our Lord was exceedingly abundant, with faith and love which are in Christ Jesus (1 Timothy 1.12–14). 

Paul blasphemed the name of Jesus, persecuted the followers of Jesus, and generally was a rude and arrogant man, but Jesus showed such a man mercy, pouring out upon him super abundant grace, saving the chief of sinners.
