Jeremiah knew what offended the God of Israel, and the prophet knew what the people were doing to offend God, because the Lord revealed,

Now the Lord gave me knowledge of it, and I know it; for You showed me their doings (Jeremiah 11.18). 

This is true not only of the situation then, but of anything. We know, because the Lord gave us the ability to discover it, or He revealed the knowledge, such as He has done in the Scriptures.
