Who can withstand the Lord?

Jeremiah Bible Background

11.08.2014 Old Testament: Jer 49.19

To read the Bible in a year, read Jeremiah 49–50 on November 8, In the year of our Lord 2014

By Don Ruhl

Edom thought that they could not be brought down, believing that their natural fortresses and good fortune made them invincible. However, like most nations, they forgot who created all things, and to whom we must all give an account. Therefore, the Lord said of Edom,

“Behold, he shall come up like a lion from the floodplain of the Jordan
Against the dwelling place of the strong;
But I will suddenly make him run away from her.
And who is a chosen man that I may appoint over her?
For who is like Me?
Who will arraign Me?
And who is that shepherd
Who will withstand Me?”
(Jeremiah 49.19)

The first four lines show that the Lord would control the actions of Edom and Babylon, and the last four lines show why the Lord can control the nations.

  • There is none like Him.
  • Who will arraign Him? Who will bring Him to court? Who will bring charges against Him?
  • Show us another shepherd that can withstand Him. Many have tried, but they have all failed.
