The Lord told Abraham of something far greater than the Land of Canaan, and so while he did want to inherit the land promised to him by God, Abraham knew of something far beyond this Earth,

By faith he dwelt in the land of promise as in a foreign country, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise; for he waited for the city which has foundations, whose builder and maker is God (Hebrews 11.9–10). 

Man builds spectacular cities, but somehow I do not believe they can in anyway be compared to the city the God of heaven has made. Abraham so lived his life that he might one day see that city, and as his children, we should do the same.
