The Lord’s witnesses on the Earth, the church and the Scriptures, appeared to be dead, and that made the Lord’s enemies very happy,

Then those from the peoples, tribes, tongues, and nations will see their dead bodies three–and–a–half days, and not allow their dead bodies to be put into graves. And those who dwell on the earth will rejoice over them, make merry, and send gifts to one another, because these two prophets tormented those who dwell on the earth (Revelation 11.9–10). 

The church torments the world by preaching the Scriptures. Therefore, if the church shrinks so much that it no longer has any influence in the world, the people of the Earth rejoice. However, the church and the Scriptures will only appear to be dead.
