They did not take it to heart from the beginning

Malachi Bible Background

12.31.2014 Old Testament: Mal 2.1–2

To read the Bible in a year, read Malachi on December 31, In the year of our Lord 2014

As we read the last communication from God in the Hebrew Scriptures, we discover that He had to rebuke His people constantly. Listen to what He said to the priests,

“And now, O priests, this commandment is for you.
If you will not hear,
And if you will not take it to heart,
To give glory to My name,”
Says the Lord of hosts,
“I will send a curse upon you,
And I will curse your blessings.
Yes, I have cursed them already,
Because you do not take it to heart.”
(Malachi 2.1–2)

Even as the prophet spoke the word, warning them against not taking the Lord’s word to heart, even then, they were not taking it to heart. Therefore, the threatened curse He poured out on them immediately!

Reading the Bible is not a good luck charm. We read the words of the God of heaven, and we had better take it to heart more than anything else we have ever heard.
