Jesus trained the twelve not only to be His disciples, but to be preachers. Yet, the things He taught them can apply to everyone of us. Notice this,

And as He walked by the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. Then Jesus said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men.” They immediately left their nets and followed Him (Mark 1.16–18).

The other Gospel Accounts show that these men had already heard Jesus teach and preach. Therefore, when He told them to follow Him, their hearts had already been set to do so. As preachers, they left their old occupations, and followed Jesus to do later what He was doing then.

In most cases, becoming a follower of Jesus does not mean you have to leave your occupation, but it does mean your heart has to be set to follow Him wherever He leads you, and that might mean a major change in your life.
