The Roman centurion had nothing to gain or to lose by the life or death of Jesus of Nazareth, at least politically speaking. However, when the centurion watched the manner in which Jesus died, the centurion said something wonderful,

So when the centurion, who stood opposite Him, saw that He cried out like this and breathed His last, he said, “Truly this Man was the Son of God!” (Mark 15.39). 

There you have it. A witness to the crucifixion concluded that Jesus had to be the Son of God.
