04.09.2015 Old Testament: 1Sa 2.1–3
To read the Bible in a year, read First Samuel 1–3 on April 9, In the year of our Lord 2015
By Don Ruhl
Hannah suffered humiliation by the other woman whom her husband had married, because Hannah could not have children. Then she prayed to the Lord, promising to give the son to the Lord forever, if the Lord blessed her with a son. When it happened, she spoke magnificent words,
And Hannah prayed and said:
“My heart rejoices in the Lord;
My horn is exalted in the Lord.
I smile at my enemies,
Because I rejoice in Your salvation.
No one is holy like the Lord,
For there is none besides You,
Nor is there any rock like our God.
Talk no more so very proudly;
Let no arrogance come from your mouth,
For the Lord is the God of knowledge;
And by Him actions are weighed.”
(1 Samuel 2.1–3)
Hannah believed what we should believe, that the source of our rejoicing is the Lord. Notice that, although she wanted a son, he was not the primary source of her rejoicing, but she centered her life on the Lord.
