David wanted to build the Lord a house, but the Lord said no, and promised to build David a house, a dynasty. The Lord spoke of David’s house lasting for a long time, moving David to speak a prayer of great humility,

Then King David went in and sat before the Lord; and he said: “Who am I, O Lord God? And what is my house, that You have brought me this far? And yet this was a small thing in Your sight, O Lord God; and You have also spoken of Your servant’s house for a great while to come. Is this the manner of man, O Lord God?” (2 Samuel 7.18–19).

David could not wrap his mind around what the Lord had done for him thus far, and then to promise something stretching far into the future, made David question who he was. He never concluded that he must be someone wonderful and that he should love himself, no, he turned to the Lord and magnified Him.
